Replacing the Rotting Siding

We spent all day yesterday (from about 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.) working on our kitchen: cleaning, scrubbing, and laying down thick coats of polyurethane in all the cabinets and drawers. It’s finally done – although our old Jenn-Air cooktop could probably use a good soak in some degreaser. I’m thinking a couple two-liter bottles of Coke will do the job.

Assuming that a day’s worth of polyurethane fumes was probably enough, we took a break from the kitchen today. I mowed up our pitiful lawn this morning, and now we’re doing laundry at Grandma’s house down the road. While we’re waiting for socks to dry, I thought I’d post some updates. Last week was busy, as it turns out.

The most visible work was on our two porches – which are nearly done – and on the siding along the west side of the house. Poor drainage off the roof has caused the wood there to rot in a few places, including the wood around one of our parlor windows. It turns out that the moisture barrier there wasn’t too swell anyway, so it’s just as well that they had to tear things out.

The siding on the west side of the house was in the worst shape.

Not looking forward to spending the night in our attic. Today is the hottest day of the year so far (I think it hit 100 degrees in Rapid City this afternoon), and things are bound to be pretty unpleasant up there.
